I Am Rage takes audiences on a harrowing and suspenseful journey through a dark and twisted narrative of revenge and bloodlust. From its opening scene in a dimly lit basement, where a masked girl prepares to torture a captive man, the film establishes a disturbing atmosphere that persists throughout.
The movie introduces us to Erin, a troubled young woman who awakens from a haunting nightmare. She reluctantly joins her boyfriend Adam, along with his brother Michael and Michael’s girlfriend Sara, for a camping trip at Adam's parents' house. Erin's apprehension is palpable, exacerbated by the fact that she was informed about the trip last minute and feels a desire to be alone. Upon arriving at the house, Sara is quick to notice signs of wealth, while Adam reveals that his family sustains themselves by consuming only what they hunt, as evidenced by a mounted deer head in the living room. The arrival of Adam's parents, who emanate an eerie energy, only adds to the sense of unease.
As the story progresses, we are introduced to Mr. Wilson, who is accompanied by two masked assistants on a hunting expedition. They target a bound man in the woods, with Mr. Wilson displaying a disturbing enthusiasm for the hunt. The film masterfully intertwines different storylines, leaving the audience on edge as they try to decipher the connections.
Erin and Sara’s interactions hint at a deeper understanding between them. Erin's habit of taking pills and her reluctance to reveal her reasons contribute to the intrigue surrounding her character. Flashbacks to a past ordeal suggest that Erin has endured a history of torture, leaving her with unaddressed trauma and simmering anger. The disturbing nature of the story intensifies when the film reveals the family's grotesque secret in graphic and unsettling scenes. Characters act out disgusting acts of torture and the film does not shy away from showcasing the brutality of the acts, adding a visceral and unnerving quality to the narrative.
I Am Rage is not for the faint-hearted, as it tackles dark and disturbing themes and features graphic and intense scenes of violence. The film's unsettling atmosphere, coupled with the ominous backdrop of the family’s secret business, creates an enduring sense of unease. With its haunting narrative, strong performances, and atmospheric cinematography, "I Am Rage" captivates viewers, immersing them in a world of secrets, violence, and unbridled rage. The movie delivers a thrilling and pulse-pounding experience that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats until its shocking and explosive conclusion.
Rorschach Rating:
Mental Health Moment: Rage is something Erin clearly struggles with throughout the film, but she doesn’t let her past drag her down. She uses her past and how it hurt her, to survive her future. She takes her seething rage and uses it as a weapon against those who try to hurt her. While Erin’s past is something most people would not have survived, it’s only made Erin stronger.
