The fascination with the stars and what is out there has been a topic of interest for kids of all ages. Some grow up to become astronauts while others go into research and science. Some of those kids went on to work normal jobs and help with projects like MUFON, or the Mutual UFO Network. No matter how the curious came to their curiosity, or how they ended up on their chosen topic of interest, they all seek answers, in some way, from the stars.
Growing up I had that curiosity myself, of space and what might be out there. I thought about becoming an astronaut or getting into some sort of science. You know what ended up getting me even more curious? UFOs, extraterrestrials, and the possibilities of what could be out there. From WW2 era rumors and sightings like the Battle of Los Angeles, or the abduction of Travis Walton or Betty and Barney Hill, to the modern investigations of Skinwalker Ranch - the idea that life is out there in the vast expanse of space can make one wonder what is out there.
Night Visitors enters the room! What we have here in Night Visitors is a documentary primarily talking about the topic of UFOs, abductions, strange coincidences, and most importantly, cattle mutilation. Cattle mutilation is a general term. Sightings are often in tandem with the mutilation of wildlife. The most frequent example is cattle, but mauled horses and other animals have been documented as well. What makes the incidents strange is how they seem to be done in almost a surgical precision with little to no blood or even any traces of anyone or anything attacking the animal. Night Visitors explores this more in depth, along with other coincidences like the arrival of black helicopters shortly after some of the events. They always seem to disappear into the mountains after being seen.
The topic of cattle mutilation in unexplained events is somewhat interesting. What purpose does it serve? What does it seem to be somewhat random? Why cattle in most cases? Why the oddities surrounding the events after? It would be easy to turn this into basically a review of questions left after these events happen. This documentary covers a lot of topics around the subject but builds primarily on the mysteries surrounding the mutilations themselves. It makes it stand out in the category of paranormal documentaries.
Now this may not be for everyone. The big issue I had with it was the pacing. The pacing can be a little slow at points. A few awkward pauses with mountainous views is fine on occasion. I get that in some instances it may have been for dramatic effect. However, after some time and multiple shots like that, it loses what it is trying to accomplish. That is really the only complaint I had. I can’t really find fault in any other areas for me as a fan of the genre.
Really what Night Visitors does, it does well. It scratches that itch for some sort of out of this world, strange events documentary. It hits every checkbox for the weirdo that is into this kind of stuff. I don’t really disappoint in any way other than from a pacing aspect on occasion. All in all I recommend it for the X-Files aficionado into the subjects of unknown and possible paranoia.
Rorschach Rating:
Mental Health Moment: The Unknown is a scary thing. What’s in the dark? What does the future hold? In the case of this documentary, what is out there and what is it doing to the cows? I say the latter in jest, as for some it is terrifying, and for others, hilariously absurd. The point is that people fear the unknown. The more you learn the less fear can control you. The less fear can prevent you from doing things you want or need to do. If knowledge is power then, then learning can be the conduit to strength. Let fear be a driving force for good and achievement. Don’t let it prevent you from your future.
