Mental Health Through Pop Culture

Rosemont: Breathe

It’s sometimes funny how we develop habits unbeknownst to us. How something can exist one day and not be there the next or vice versa. I’ve been a mental health advocate for a little over ten years now. It wasn’t until I was a little over a year into my marriage that my wife makes the commit that I might have anxiety. I’ve gone through depression, suicide, self-mutation, self-hatred, and addiction. I’ve seen the ugly side of life. Yet, in that moment of hearing that I might have anxiety - all I could think about was breathe in, breathe out.

That’s just what Daniel Hassel (a.k.a. Rosemont) sings about in his first few bars of his latest single - Breathe. Breathe is the first single Hassel has released in a little over a year and a half and honestly, it’s a complex work of art. Drawing from the independent artists like Jack’s Mannequin, early Coldplay or Death Cab for Cutie. Coupled with Hassel’s soulful voice - Breathe crafts a rather unique listening experience. Hassel builds the soulful nature of the music to an arena sound worthy of My Chemical Romance. When Breathe becomes heavy it never loses its’ mastery. Hassel manages to create a dual listening experience that beautifully builds, blends and works in his favor.

Rosemont is an artist you should definitely check out and know. The duality of Breathe’s sound, married with Hassel’s voice and impacting lyrics will immediately leave you wanting more from the artist.
